Georgia State University, located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, combines traditional university     education with opportunities found only in a vibrant urban setting. The university's location allows students to learn not only in classrooms but also in the surrounding city through service projects and intern­ships, where high-profile companies pro­vide hands-on experience.

Founded in 1913, Georgia State is the state's second-largest institution of higher education, offering 52 degrees in 250 fields of study through six colleges and schools: the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education, the College of Health and Human Sciences, the J. Mack Robinson College of Busi­ness and the College of Law. Annually, more than 40,000 students are seeking degrees with more than 28,100 enrolled (or fall semester 2003. Georgia State is one of the most diverse universities in the Southeast with students from each of Georgia's 159 counties, all 50 United States and more than 145 countries.

Georgia State's academic reputation as a leading urban research institution rises each year, Scientists and researchers, seeking discoveries in fields from genetics and biotechnology to fitness and literacy, add greater value to the classroom experience of under­graduate and graduate students.

From African-American studies to business to health sciences to public pol­icy, Georgia State offers full- and part- time study in a wide variety of fields in day, evening and weekend classes. Many students attend daily classes in the Helen M. Aderhold Learning Center located in the Fairlie-Poplar district of downtown. The Aderhold Center, with its 48 classrooms and a cyber caf6, serves more than 15,000 students daily. Stu­dents who choose to live in campus housing have the Georgia State Univer­sity Village or the University Lofts avail­able to them.

 


Georgia State encourages students to be active in university life, and a wide variety of options are available. Students can choose to become involved with the university's student-operated, award-winning radio station WRAS; concert committees; student government; sorori­ties and fraternities; and campus news­paper, the Signal.

The Student Recreation Center is a major activity place on campus with stu­dents, faculty, staff and alumni enjoying 165,000 square-feet of space featuring four basketball courts, an aerobic/mar­tial arts studio, an indoor climbing wall and two pools.

Georgia State also holds graduate business and education classes in north metro Atlanta at the Alpharetta Center, a satellite campus off Old Milton Parkway.

Georgia State has one of the safest campuses in the state and one of the largest private police forces in Georgia. The department is the only major university police force in the state accredited by the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police.

The J. Mack Robinson College of Business was the only school in the state ranked in the Top 10 for return on investment by Forbes magazine. The part-time MBA program has been ranked one of the Top 10 in the nation by U.S News & World Report and the Risk Management/Insur­ance program is ranked No. 2 in the nation.

The College of Law is the only ABA-accredited law school in Georgia offering both part-time and full-time legal programs.
